A huge protective scaffold was installed beside the motorway A8 north of Pforzheim for protecting the traffic of the motorway during the installation of the conductors between Tower 24 and Tower 25. As the line crosses the motorway A8 in a flat angle, it has an enormous length.

The Towers 1 to 23 of the branch from the powerline Philippsburg-Pulverdingen to Birkenfeld have three crossbars, as they will carry on their lowest crossbar the 110 kV-circuit of the powerline Birkenfeld - Pforzheim Cogeneration Plant. On July 7th, 2024 however this line used still its old towers. In a few month the suspension tower with four conductors visible on the picture will be dismantled.

North of Pforzheim, there is a storage place with segments of tubular steel pylons. In the background one can see Tower 25 of the branch from the powerline Philippsburg-Pulverdingen to Birkenfeld

Kan een deskundige aan een leek als ik uitleggen wat het voordeel van dit nieuwe ontwerp is ? Om te maken zal er veel meer voor nodig zijn dan een vakwerkmast plus aanzienlijk duurder dus en visueel is het een ding wat enorm opvalt in het landschap, net zo storend als die palen in Zeeland.
Dus zit ik met de vraag wat nu de winst is van dit m.i. vreselijk lelijke ontwerp. Nu zullen de ontwerpers wel net zo lovend zijn als TenneT is/was over die palen in ons land maar de gewone burger zal ook dat Duitse ontwerp niet kunnen waarderen lijkt me.

The only advantage of the new design is that it requires less ground space than a conventional lattice tower.

Interesting pictures, thanks for sharing. I can appreciate the design to some extent and it looks as a very functional design. The central mast seems to be a polygonal shaped plated stucture, efficient to produce. It has flange connections with bolts at the inside and outrside, so loaded in a favourable way resulting in low flange thicknesses. For maintenance and painting works, provisions are also taken, most visually is the ring at each mast segment.

From an aesthtetic point of view, it would have been nicer if the top earth wire extensions would have been longer. For improved shielding this would have also made sense, i cannot understand the reason to keep those so small.

The old design of 380 kV/110 kV-towers of Badenwerk ( download/file.php?id=41113 ) is in my opinion more aesthetic as the new design of 380 kV/110 kV-towers by Transnet ( download/file.php?id=41119 )

I don't understand why they use such massive crossarms anyway. The only cause weight, what makes the pylon more heavy and expensive to built.

Denmark made more smart tubular 380kV pylons. The crossbars are flexible and fixed with wire ropes to the pole.

Small preview:

Erection of HVDC transmission towers near Mannheim. Actually in this area a lot of construction for new powerlines (380 kV AC as well as DC!) is ongoing. Hopefully when I will have more time, I'll make a bigger report. I took a lot (!) of photos since end of last year. Or maybe it's more handy if I'll make this when everything is more or less ready?
